I had the privilege of being invited to submit for Moving Arts‘ next series of CAR PLAYS, which is part of the RADAR LA International Festival at CalArts REDCAT this June.
Get all that? I’ll explain below.
The very cool part, though, is that Moving Arts asked me, I submitted a total of three plays, and they chose my favorite, Dragon Compact. I am not producing, nor am I directing. For anyone who knows me, this is a big step. I am one playwright among many and I couldn’t be happier!
Paul Stein, Cece Tio and Steve Lozier are the creative producers, and they run an awesomely tight ship. Incredibly encouraging at every turn and respectful of the many artists involved, it’s been a sheer pleasure working with them. My director Kelly Lohman is great, with ideas that totally fit and elevate my story.
Tonight we had the last night of auditions. I stayed past the time that actors read for my play, mostly because the next month is busy and I am not sure when I’ll be in the same room with many of the writers and directors involved, if at all. I loved hearing the other plays and getting a sense of all the various personalities and ways of working in the room.
I feel incredibly privileged to return to Moving Arts; I sat on a panel in 2008 that E.M. Lewis ran called “Writing About the War,” which was my first direct contact with the company. I truly hope it is not my last.

I pulled the below information off the REDCAT website. Please reserve soon! I am not sure how you request to see the row of cars that will have my play Dragon Compact, but all the Car Plays are fun! Moving Arts: The Car Plays: L.A. Stories
“This unique melding of site-specific theater and freeway crawl should be hailed as a local treasure… the production’s voyeuristic appeal is undeniable.” —LA Weekly
Responding to the vast landscape of Los Angeles, Moving Arts presents a series of intimate ten-minute plays in which audiences of two move from vehicle to vehicle, experiencing works by different playwrights in a dramatic setting familiar to all Angelenos—the car. After being ushered to a rear seat, the car doors close and the drama unfolds as people in the car break up, make up, make out or even deal with a dead body or two, just inches away. Ten minutes later, the doors open, a seat in a new car awaits, and a fresh story begins. In the course of about one hour, five evocative L.A. stories are revealed.
