#ShareAScene – Fatima Quest

the story of Fatima in an Atwater Village front yard

I’m in the midst of figuring this piece out in Indianapolis. FATIMA QUEST explores how growing up with the Virgin Mary shapes our views on sex and our bodies. I actually think she found me. She saw me walking down the hall towards her and knew Shewas Who I Needed. She can teach me. At …

Summer Nights on the Boulevard

Businesses stay open late. The taco stand holds an ice cream social. Parents try a new daycare that just opened. Live bands and yoga samples all within shouting distance of each other. Neighbors meeting each other. Business owners talking to everyone. People driving through who stop and walk around Atwater Village for the first time. …

Atwater Village a New Arts Destination This is a repost of a Bitter Lemons article I wrote on Dec 19, 2010. More on the Atwater Village Arts Community can be found here. Atwater Village “between the river and the tracks” It’s shaped like a banana and borders the 5 freeway. Neighboring areas include Elysian Valley, …

Free Beer From God

nothland brewery

From the people who brought you the 1st Annual Atwater Art Walk: “For centuries, monasteries served as bastions of civility, preserving learning and extending charity to those around them. In this context a rich tradition of beer making developed, one that provided for the poor and evidenced a belief in a God who desires to …

Atwater Art Walk: a self-portrait of my 20′s in collage

Local artist painting another artist painting the art walkers

I did this random thing last week. I submitted to the first Annual Atwater Village Art Walk, a wonderful event presented by the Northland Village Church in my neighborhood. I know the Pastor through our work on the neighborhood council and although not a practitioner, I love their community involvement and the people I’ve met …

Atwater Village Visioning Summit Pics

1301174959797

Some pictures taken at last week’s Atwater Village Visioning Summit are below. People were asked to suggest tangible ways to help our neighborhood, so that City Council President Eric Garcetti could focus on real improvement  CD13, which involves a good portion of Atwater Village. Do you agree with their ideas? Do you have more? They …

Atwater Village Visioning Summit

DSCN0320

My stories are often about Atwater Village (as in here and here), and I really love how I’ve been able to get involved in the community recently. We’re given a rare opportunity this Saturday to speak directly to LA City Council President Eric Garcetti, and help him understand where our community wants him to focus …

The Little Fireman

I frequent Kaldi Coffee & Tea in Atwater Village. It has a great extended sidewalk in front and lots of neighborhood activity thrives there. Next door is Heartbeat House, a dance/yoga studio that nearly killed me once. (It wasn’t their fault; I tried yoga after two very dormant years.)

Donate so awareness is accessible

Many reading this site know about an ongoing awareness effort of mine, Voices From Chornobyl. This year we want to mount a children’s interactive show at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, create a completely accessible experience with ASL interpreters and visual describers, and reach even more people than ever. “How can you talk about radiation when …

Happy Days in Atwater Village

I sat at an outdoor table today and happened to be at the right angle to see the gift someone had left. I love this neighborhood.

Username burnout

books on stairs

It’s probably a vast understatement to say that I have many interests. Strange times are afoot, when my previous obsessions (theatre)  fade into the background and newer (neighborhood council) or latent interests (writing) prevail. Unintended consequence (my new favorite phrase)? Username burnout. Account schizophrenia. You know what I mean and it’s horribly embarassing. Your very …

Atwater Village: more information on the sewer repairs

Manhole 3100 block Atwater Avenue

I popped onto Facebook for a 5-minute break this morning and saw this headline via the Atwater Village Chamber of Commerce: MAJOR SEWER REPAIR ON FLETCHER DRIVE EXPECTED TO CREATE HAVOC FOR COMMUTERS AND ATWATER VILLAGE LOCALS So I got a little distracted. Actually, thirty minutes later, very distracted. Instead of fuming and imagining the …

Bringing art & community to people

Imagine Interaction

When people ask me what I’ve been doing lately, we always come back to it. Yes, I’ve been writing. Yes, I’m teaching and coaching more and loving it. Outreach is what I am most interested in pursuing, though. While trying to explain how my work on the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council is a natural outgrowth …

Representative-At-Large: hey, that's me!

Atwater Village Neighborhood COuncil: where progress is tradition

A year ago I don’t think I even knew what a neighborhood council (NC) was.  Never one to leap into an unknown topic (Voices From Chornobyl, anyone), I set about educating myself. But not until two members of the East Hollywood NC approached me to become Project Director for Imagine East Hollywood. The combination of …
