The Working Director | Armina LaManna

I met Armina while we both worked at The Fountain Theatre. As many from the Fountain family, we’ve stayed in touch and often entered each other’s lives again at exactly the right moment (at least from my perspective)! I also always feel a special private affinity towards anyone who directs “A Caucasian Chalk Circle,” a …

The Working Director | Che'Rae Adams

Che’Rae Adams is a good friend, and amazing collaborator as Director & Dramaturg. Remounting Karen Anzoategui’s solo show SER at the Hollywood Fringe Festival interests me and so I invited her to be profiled as a Working Director. You can also read about my personal experience in her workshop at the LA Writer’s Center here, …

The Working Director | Dan Berkowitz

I met Dan Berkowitz perhaps the way that many in LA have: through the Director/Dramatist Exchange, a wonderful networking opportunity with the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights, or ALAP. Wonderful to hear how he is also an incredible Working Director, and thrilled to profile him here! Not to mention that I am also attracted to …

The Working Director | Jacob Smith

I was interested in interviewing Jacob because of the high praise he received from a colleague Gregory Crafts , while in rehearsals and performance at Theatre Unleashed . This theater company and director caught my attention in large part because they always donate a portion of their ticket income to a related cause, much like …

The Working Director | Jen Bloom

Ideally, I post these profiles before a show opens. Because of Jen being extremely immersed in this process, then my schedule, it’s a little late. However, I’m glad of the timing because I had the privilege to see this production yesterday. I can’t even get into the inventive, playful nature of this Tempest adaptation; it’s …

JENNS

The Working Director | Jenn Scuderi

Jenn is an artist I’ve seen onstage (beautifully embodying Marc Antony in T.U.’s Julius Caesar) and know purely through her great work within the theatre community. You can just feel her spirit emanating from her presence onstage, and I look forward to learning more about her! Fringe Page: http://www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/346 CMJ: Please give a short description …

The Working Director | Joe Luis Cedillo

I’ve just recently met Joe Luis Cedillo, briefly at an LAThtr Meetup and then again at a Hollywood Fringe Festival Town Hall. When I learned his company had a character tweeting and asks the audience to keep their cell phones on during the show, you can just imagine my glee. All I have to say …

The Working Director | Joshua Morrison

One of the coolest parts of these interviews is quite simply the people I get to know. A fan of Theatre Unleashed since the 2010 Hollywood Fringe Festival, reading about Joshua Morrison and his process now encourages me to get off my home-office butt and go see this show. CMJ: Please give a short description …

The Working Director | Lynne Moses

Here we have a wonderful example of Linked in connecting artists. Hilary White contacted me as something with common interests and I learned of this production. The story is pretty close to home right now. Could this be one of the first kitchen sinks I actively go to see? CMJ: Please give a short description …

The Working Director | Richard Tatum

I had the pleasure of seeing two Richard Tatum productions, The Girl Who Would be King by Jan O’Connor and Group when it premiered in early 2011. After King I decided to see anything and everything he directed. Tatum clearly has a mastery over a play’s story and his own craft. It also always seems …

The Working Director | Samuel Hunter

I met Samuel Hunter at a Hollywood Fringe Town Hall and learned he is one of the UCSD recent graduate crowd who I find so inspiring, as you can read in these interviews with Lonesome No More artists . Indeed, there is some cross-over with last year’s Pagan Play which I loved so much. These …

The Working Directors | Dana Murphy & Patrick Riley

Meghan McCauley connected me to Dana & Patrick after we swapped interviews for our Fringe shows. You can read Meghan’s profile of my play here as well as my conversation with her on Spring Awakening here. Meghan produced the Fringe show Dana and Patrick are directing, and I have to say, it sounds very exciting! …

The Working [self] Director | Simon Coronel

Simon Coronel is an Australian Illusionist. As such, he is just as dreamy as you might imagine. We met through Twitter and although frequently in Fringe Central’s Tent at the same time, I got to know him mostly through his cabaret segment done mostly in Mandarin and other people. It was a joy to adjust …
